The other day I was researching ways to improve my blog. I realize that as the Editor in Chief (haha!) of The Less than Domestic Goddess, with an (unpaid) staff of 1, the onus falls on me to keep working to expand on my ideas and writing. A simple Google search about blog writing brought me to a post by Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist. Ever heard of her? I am new to her site, but her tip about passion stood out to me.
Be passionate.Passion is rare. It’s something we are all attracted to, but it’s something few people can muster. That’s why most people are bad in bed, and it’s why most people are bad bloggers. Unleashing passion is scary. You don’t know where it will go. So instead, most people try to sort of keep themselves under control. This is boring. You instinctively know it’s boring, because you remember who was fun in bed. A post with passion can actually overcome the curse of a boring topic or a lack of insight, and poor structure on top of all that. For example, here is a rant from the blog, Barstool Sports. I love this rant because it’s funny and emphatic and quirky. Most passion ends up being quirky, by the way, because when you’re passionate you are letting yourself be totally you.I was laughing out loud at the analogy of being bad in bed. I just wrote a post about how I covet my privacy. Because I protect my privacy, sometimes I do struggle with, what I view, as a lack of passion on my blog. Many of the things I am most passionate about like my family, my marriage, politics, social awareness, career aspirations, etc. don’t always make it onto the blog. But in return, I keep things simple…some might say “safe”. Blog drama is kept to a minimum, and I don’t really worry about readers judging me or my life. I suppose there is a way to balance passion with privacy. You can certainly have passion and maintain your privacy.
I look forward to trying to better myself and this blog. I will definitely share any interesting tid bits I find along the way.
Do you think you blog with passion? Or are you bad in bed, so to speak?

This was an interesting read! I was just thinking about this and how I tend to be pretty guarded & private (in life and in my blog). I wonder what would happen to my writing if I could unleash all that. But it's kinda a scary prospect, no?

I think that's why I don't update my blog daily. I've thought about it, but I don't have something in my life everyday that I'm really passionate about that develops. For example, I'm excited about changes in my career, but there's nothing new to report on that front just yet. (Maybe soon though!) I'm passionate about Disney and writing, but I haven't really put the time into that blog, since my home computer is crapping out on me.

So maybe when I get to work from home you'll see more blogging changes. 🙂

I definitely don't put myself entirely out there on my blog, so I can relate. I find it terrifying. I usually don't open up about religion or politics in real life either, even though I have pretty strong convictions in both areas. BUT I do think I write the way I talk and some of my quirkiness does shine through, so maybe I am mildly ok in bed. 😉

I have enough drama in my real life, I don't want it in a virtual world!

Love this. Just this year, I am trying to figure out what I am passionate about.

I love Mo and I totally agree with her. My blog is only a subset of my life – I don't want to put all the venting and suckiness on there and as IRL I'm pretty private. I purposely keep it somewhat light and try to write about interesting finds or tips. Readers only know and judge you by the things you write so I only want to show that side.

I still find it fun and think my personality still shows.
