I hoard things. When I was little, my brothers and I would get Christmas candy from my grandparents’ friends; those See’s candies kiddie boxes. My brothers’ boxes would be empty in a few weeks. I would hoard mine forever, thinking I was savoring it, then forget about it. My mom would usually end up throwing out my rotten candy sometime in April.

I do the same thing with cash and gift cards. I hold on to all of my gift cards waiting for this magical shopping moment when the moon and stars will align. Of course it never happens, and I am saddled with all of these cards. Not a bad place to be in, but still, it’s hard for me to actually use them. I know, it’s weird.

I am getting better. Recently, I splurged with some Macy’s cards we got as wedding gifts. Hello, Michael Kors Demi Wedges. Wait, was I supposed to spend that money on spatulas or cake pans? Damn.

Anyway, the other day I discovered that I have a Visa gift card that I have been holding on to for so long that it is actually due to expire this month (February)! If you’ve ever had a Visa gift card, you’ll know that they give you like two years to spend it. Sometime this week, I plan on taking my plastic to the mall and adhering to my New Year’s resolution to buy STAPLES for my wardrobe. I’m excited to see what I find. I’ll report back soon to let you know how it went 🙂

Cute shoes! I'm with you- I have some Macy's cards that I'm supposed to be saving for a vacuum cleaner but am SO tempted to update my wardrobe. 🙂

I can't wait to see what you come up with! Once I have more time to shop & think (so busy right now), I am going to do the same thing.

Don't worry – you're not that weird! I save gift cards too. Usually for a "Rainy day" because NOTHING feels better than getting that free cup of Starbucks when you can't afford it, or going to that FREE movie, when you can barely afford rent. ; )Then I TRULY appreciate it!

If you live in CA (which I know you do 😉 ) your gift card CANNOT expire! It doesn't matter what the actual card says, it is illegal for any gift card to expire (even Visa/AmEx) in CA. I know you probably spent it already (this is an old post), but just future knowledge!
