Happy New Year, everyone!

I am seeing a lot of 2010 recap blog posts in my Google Reader. The first thing I thought of when I considered writing about my 2010 in review was, “I got married!”

Then I remembered, “Oh shit. That was 2009.”

“2010…2010….uhhhh….what the heck did I do in 2010?”

The truth is that a lot of great things happened to me, and a few not so great things happened. As much as I love reading everyone else’s recaps, I am choosing not to recap my own life in 2010.

I can’t pinpoint exactly why I don’t want to reflect on the past year, but lately I have this compulsive desire to look forward instead of backwards. So that’s what I’m going to do. I am going to keep myself busy thinking about where I need to go rather than where I’ve been.

Here are a few important things I am pondering…

(1) I seem to have lost sight of the purpose of this blog. Was there ever a purpose? Am I just aimlessly writing diary-style or do I have more to offer my readers? This is something I want to figure out as soon as possible.

(2) Knock on wood…my marriage is going really well right now. After a year and a half of marriage and over seven years together, we have found a rhythm. I want to continue to figure out what works for us and what doesn’t.

(3) I need to find purpose in my career. I have a master’s degree that I haven’t put to good use and this saddens me. It seems to be a common theme amongst many people I encounter. But, this is not good. I have six figures of debt tied to education. MUST FIND PURPOSE!

(4) Continued intense focus on my health and wellness. Taking good care of myself has resulted in small miracles in the health department for me. No babies yet, but more “feel good” days, which I consider a great victory.

That’s all I can think of for now in terms of big things.

How are you all doing? Any big plans for 2011 yet?

Bravo on looking forward. Always better than looking back – something I need to learn. I struggled with the blog purpose thing and then I decided to stick to personal (but not) diary. I have nothing to offer anyone, but if they find something for them in what I say, then all the better. And you've successfully talked me out of graduate school. Thank you (not sarcasm).

I'll be FINALLY moving out of California this year!!!! To either Washington state or Georgia. And I'll be moving within the next 4 months! This is something I've yet to announce on my own blog.

Great to hear things are going great!

I like the diary style personal blogging. I think more people can relate than you might realize.

I'm suffering from burn out though too. 8 years in the same career. Oy.

I'm with you – I was thinking "I got married this past year! … oh yeah … 2009" … So what did I do in 2010? I got a new job in January after being unemployed for almost 4 months. I was laid off 4 weeks after buying a house in the early fall.

So what did I do in 2010? I got a job that I enjoyed but that didn't pay nearly as much as any job since finishing grad school and that has dubious career advancement prospects for about 10 years. (Then the prospects are very good, but that's a lot of time for an advancement.) Hmm … that's it at my end!

Oh, and I ended the year by consuming far too much alcohol (somehow I though I was in university again) and began 2011 with a very bad hangover (when I got up, that is). So not off to a good start! 🙁

oops, let me clarify. Bought house Aug 2009. Laid off Sept 2009. Got new job Jan 2010. Re-reading my comment, the year I was laid off was ambiguous.

I agree with your not really wanting to recap. 2010 was kind of a bad year for me (even though we got married this year, which makes me want to whine about how bad it was even less). I'm thinking for my "New year's post" I'll try to focus more on the good, while still acknowledging the bad times – since being more positive is one of my goals anyway! Best wishes in 2011 and beyond! Nice to hear from you again!

I struggle with my blog and its purpose but just decided to keep it personal and not think about it too much–we have enough to stress about!

I think it's great that you are looking ahead (and not back). 2011 is going to be fantastic. 🙂
