A Spring BBQ with Michelob ULTRA Light Cider

Recently, I got the opportunity to taste the new Michelob ULTRA Light Cider. We had an amazing Memorial Day BBQ planned, and I was really excited to give the cider a whirl. I have actually been looking for a lighter alternative to my occasional beer or glass of white wine. I have tried hard ciders in the past; and while I am drawn to their sweet taste, I haven’t found one that I am particularly loyal to.

I have a pretty low tolerance for alcohol these days. Compared to my college days, I am a pitiful lightweight. I rarely drink more than one glass or bottle of anything. But, I'm okay with that, because unlike when I was a student, I don't have a lot of time to nurse a hangover nor am I interested in eating an entire pizza after a night of drinking!

The Michelob ULTRA Light Cider did not disappoint. It tasted cool, refreshing, and a lot like fizzy apple juice. It was the perfect complement to my overfilled BBQ plate of chicken skewers, grilled salmon, cucumber salad, and egg and potato salad. To top it off, it is only 120 calories per bottle (which I learned is one-third fewer calories than an average of the leading regular hard ciders).

I indulged in more than one, and got a nice, little buzz going - but nothing that left me feeling bloated or sluggish. I chose to drink it chilled and straight from the bottle, and that suited me just fine. But, I suppose it would have worked well in a glass with ice, too. Some of the guys at the BBQ were intrigued by what I was drinking, and started to poke fun when they found out I was drinking “light cider”. Then they tried a few sips, and seemed to change their tunes. While it doesn’t pack the punch (or the belly) that their dark beers do, I am more than fine with my bubbly, “girly” cocktail!

Overall, I was quite happy with this product. I am definitely going to be stocking up on a few more six packs for warm summer nights, and weekend BBQs. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an ideal alternative to white wine, champagne and traditional ciders.
